The Treaty of Paris Comes into Force

23/7/1952

The Treaty of Paris establishes the European Coal and Steel Community, which aims to create a common market for coal and steel with the ultimate goal of avoiding future conflicts over these valuable resources.
The ECSC is a precursor to later European organizations.
The founding members of the Community are Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany.
Based on the Treaty, a Common Assembly of “representatives of the people” is established.
The ECSC Treaty, which expired in 2002, is the first founding Treaty of the European Community.
