The Veto in the United Kingdom for its Accession to the EEC

29/1/1963

The President of the Ministerial Conference and Deputy Foreign Minister of Belgium, Henri Fayat, officially announces the suspension of the United Kingdom’s accession negotiations with the member states of the European Economic Community (EEC). The decision to suspend had been taken unilaterally the previous day by the French side, and during the Conference, the French Foreign Minister, Maurice Couve de Murville, tried to justify this decision. However, the arguments of the French Foreign Minister were not accepted by the British side.
