Treaty of Amsterdam

The Treaty of Amsterdam is signed in the capital of the Netherlands. This Treaty prepares the European Union for the accession of new member states. Henceforth, the new President of the Commission can only be appointed with the approval of the European Parliament. It builds on the achievements of the Maastricht Treaty and proposes plans for reforms in EU institutions to strengthen Europe’s voice in the world and allocate more resources for employment and citizens’ rights. It enters into force on May 1, 1999.
