Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, and Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, traveled to Valletta, where they signed a joint Declaration on a Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility (CAMM) with Ethiopia, represented by Hailemariam Desalegn, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, in the presence of Jean Asselborn, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs and Minister of Immigration and Asylum of Luxembourg. This joint Declaration reflects the importance of Ethiopia as a key country of origin, transit, and destination for irregular migrants and refugees from the Horn of Africa on their route to Europe.
Subsequently, the Heads of State and Government participated in the Valletta Summit on migration. On this occasion, Jean-Claude Juncker launched the EU Emergency Trust Fund for stability and addressing the root causes of irregular migration and displaced persons in Africa, which consists of 1.8 billion euros from the EU budget and the European Development Fund (EDF), and will be supplemented by contributions from EU member states and other donors. To date, member state contributions have amounted to approximately 81.3 million euros, and the EU expects more contributions to follow.
