On July 21, 2023, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, traveled to New York City in the United States to attend the closing ceremony of the 28th World Law Congress 2023. On this occasion, the President received the World Peace and Liberty Award on behalf of the European Commission. This recognition is the highest award given by the World Jurist Association (WJA) and is presented to outstanding personalities and institutions for their commitment to promoting peace through law and the rule of law as a guarantor of freedom. The WJA recognized the European Commission for its performance in enacting laws and for the way it implements the rule of law. The award ceremony was held in the presence of Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, who presented the accolade, and Felipe VI, King of Spain, as the previous winner.
