2013

The New European Commission Visitors’ Centre Opens

The new European Commission visitors’ centre opens to the public in the heart of Brussels. Visitors can sit at the table where Commissioners usually meet and explore European history through interactive touch screens. Each year, the centre hosts over 50,000 people and helps them better understand the role of the European Commission and how it can assist them.

Eighth Monnet Draft in View of the Schuman Declaration

The work towards the Schuman Declaration continues, with Jean Monnet and his collaborators proceeding to draft the eighth preliminary version.

1957

“a Target for EURATOM”

Louis Armand, Franz Etzel, and Francesco Giordani from France, Germany, and Italy respectively – also known as the Committee of Three Wise Men – publish their report titled “A Target for EURATOM”, in which they study the resources and needs of Europe in terms of nuclear energy. They submitted this Report to the Governments of the Six of the European Coal and Steel Community.

1994

Resolution of the European Parliament Approving Austria’s Accession

The European Parliament adopts a Legislative Resolution approving Austria’s application for EU membership.

2000

United in Diversity

Following a competition to find a motto for Europe, in which 80,000 young people participated, a jury chaired by former European Commission President Jacques Delors selects the winner: “United in diversity”. The motto shows that Europeans have united to form the EU with the aim of working together for peace and prosperity, while at the same time benefiting from Europe’s cultural wealth, traditions, and languages.
