Second European Elections
The European elections are held for the second time. Voters elect 434 MEPs from 10 countries. The Socialists win about 30% of the seats and increase their lead over the center-right EPP (25%).
1985
Schengen Agreement
A small village in Luxembourg lends its name to the Schengen Agreement, which gradually allows citizens to travel without passport checks at borders. The agreement was signed on June 14, 1985, by Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Today, the Schengen Area includes 26 countries.

White Paper of the Commission on the Completion of the Internal Market
The Commission submits its White Paper to the Council regarding the completion of the internal market. In this Paper, the timeline for implementing the necessary measures is defined so that the single market can be completed by December 31, 1992 at the latest.

Resolution of the European Parliament on the Imminent Accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the EU
The European Parliament, taking into account the European Commission’s Monitoring Report on the state of preparedness for EU membership of Bulgaria and Romania, dated 16 May 2006, adopts a Resolution that, among other things, addresses the progress, pending issues, and other procedures for the two countries to be ready to join the EU on 1 January 2007.

Report of the German Presidency on the Continuation of the Treaty Reform Process
The German Presidency, following a request from the European Council that took place in June 2006, submits to the other Council delegations its report on the “Continuation of the Treaty Reform Process”, so that it can serve as a basis and lead to an agreement at the European Council to be held on 21-22 June 2007.
