1963

Yaoundé Convention

The European Community signs its first major international agreement (Yaoundé Convention) aiming to assist 18 former colonies in Africa. In 2005, it establishes a special partnership with 78 African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries. The EU is the world’s largest donor of development aid to the poorest countries. A prerequisite for providing aid is respect for human rights.

1979

First Session of the Directly Elected European Parliament

From 17 to 20 July 1979, the first session of the directly elected European Parliament took place at the Palais de l’Europe in Strasbourg, France. Simone Veil was elected President of the Parliament

2004

Josep Borrell Fontelles in the Presidency of the European Parliament

Josep Borrell Fontelles is appointed by the plenary as President of the European Parliament (until 15 January 2007). In the speech he delivered during this session in Strasbourg, he advocated for the ratification of the EU Constitutional Treaty.

1955

Initial Efforts for the Establishment of the European Atomic Energy Community

The Atomic Energy Committee, following a relevant Directive from the Coordinating Committee of the Spaak Committee, undertakes the preparation of a study regarding the establishment of a common atomic energy organization for peaceful and industrial purposes. This Directive is based on the Messina Conference (June 1-3) and constitutes the first directive from the Coordinating Committee to the Atomic Energy Committee.
